Blondie, a 21 year old spur-thighed tortoise came in for her hibernation check last week. She proudly had laid her first ever clutch in August, but wasn't as energetic as before (as many a mum can relate to).
An x-ray revealed 8 eggs still waiting to be laid before she could be cleared for hibernation. Luckily she is responding to treatment & starting to lay the remaining eggs. She can then join her tortoise family for a well deserved rest, & we will check her again early Spring.
It is always important to health check tortoises before & after hibernation as they can be more susceptible to illness and injury while asleep.
